Thanksgiving Leftovers that can Harm Your Pet
It's that time of the year again where food is everywhere around the house! Turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce, stuffing, green beans, and other foods might be safe for humans, but pet owners need to be aware of what leftovers can be harmful to their furry friends. Here is a list of common holiday consumables to keep away from your pet.
1.) Nothing with alliums (i.e. garlic, leeks, or scallions)
Large quantities of alliums can lead to toxic anemia, which is a depleted level of normal red blood cell counts. This is true especially for dogs.
2.) No chocolate
Chocolate can cause abnormally high heart rhythms in dogs. In large amounts, chocolate can produce muscle tremors, seizures, internal bleeding, or a heart attack. So keep the chocolate out of reach!
3.) No grapes or raisins
These foods, served over a period of time, have caused kidney failure. So it is best to make sure your pets aren't consuming them at all.
4.) No macadamia nuts
Macadamia nuts can have several side effects for pets including weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia.
5.) No alcohol
This is an obvious one, but remember how relatively small dogs are compared to humans. If they get into the wrong punch bowl, the effects can be toxic.
